Did you receive a 1099A or 1099C in the mail ? Chances are you or someone you know has, but do not worry, there is a safe harbor so that in most cases you won't be taxed.
However, if left unreported, you could be incur taxes and penalties. Come learn the real scoop from a CPA with 30 years of experience as a tax consultant to real estate investors, Mr. Jerry Davies, BSRE, CPA.
Determining if canceled debt is taxable depends on the type of debt, your tax attributes and if you continue to own property that was subject to the canceled debt. There are also some exceptions for bankruptcy and insolvency. It is impractical to cover every situation, but some common situations will be discussed and each person's situation may be different.
